How do you know when you need new tires? You should pay attention to your vehicle’s performance, tires’ tread depth, and the age of your tires. A good general rule is that if a tire is more than six years old, even if it looks new and has never been driven on, it should be inspected thoroughly before use. The rubber becomes more brittle as it ages and can lead to tire failure or loss of performance. As a consumer, you have the right to demand newer tires if you are buying them from a retailer. To determine the date of a tire’s manufacture, look for a series on the sidewall that begins with “DOT”. The last four numbers in this sequence will tell you the week and year that a tire was made. For example, 1710 means that the tire was made in the 17th week of 2010.

If you were satisfied with the performance of your old tires, you can of course replace them with the exact same model. Most car companies spend thousands of dollars in research and development and work with tire manufacturers to choose the tires that best suit their cars, but OEM tires can be much more expensive than aftermarket ones, especially from the dealership.

Many drivers choose to replace worn OEM tires with aftermarket tires, whether it is in the interest of saving money or changing vehicle performance traits. If you choose to change tires, both online tire stores and the original manufacturer should be able to suggest other models that suit your needs.

If you want something new, you should consider the different types of tires and choose one which best matches your driving style, preferences, and road conditions. “Touring” tires may provide a softer and more comfortable ride, but performance may suffer slightly. On the other hand, high performance tires may enable you to turn, stop, and accelerate faster but be noisier and cause a harsher ride. All-season tires can provide passable performance in most conditions, but will be heavily outperformed by dedicated “summer” or winter tires, and “economy” tires may be cheap and noisy with mediocre performance but provide the best fuel economy. Used tires are never recommended, but if your budget only allows for used tires make sure to check that they are still suitable for use.
